From June 10 to June 14, 2009, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and Cartier invited the Italian architect-designer Alessandro Mendini to present for the very first time the Colonne de Cartier.

“Creating a work of art using fine and precious stones, a collection made with gems that can no longer be used in classical jewellery as they have been pierced, dismounted and engraved; giving a second life to pearls, engraved emeralds, sapphires, mandarin garnets, moonstones, diamond paving, chalcedonies and rubies…”

This column, 2.30 meters high, required over 18 months of work, from the initial sketches to the final project. In accordance with the principles of Greco-Roman architecture, this ingenuous challenge involved layering more than 7 blocks around a central axis. Its development and production were entrusted to Cartier Joaillerie.

Alessandro Mendini had presented his work at the Fondation Cartier in 2002 as part of the Fragilisme exhibition.

In collaboration with Art Basel, the Fondation Cartier invited artist and musician Patti Smith and her band to give an exclusive acoustic concert within the Elisabethen Church of Basel. This event coincided with her exhibition Land 250 which was being held in Paris from March 28 to June 22, 2008.

The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain took part in Art Basel for the first time in 2007 by giving carte blanche to French artist Pierrick Sorin, one of a number of artists who have been supported by the Fondation Cartier for many years.

Sorin turned the Fondation Cartier stand into a playful and poetic space where visitors could take part in a “work-in-progress.” Spectators were photographed by Pierrick Sorin and their virtual images then appeared in the strangest of vehicles: a Compression by César, Marc Newson’s Kelvin 40 concept jet, or Panamarenko’s Panama, Spitsbergen, Nova Zemblaya submarine. All this took place against a background that recalled the history of the Fondation Cartier and its Collection.
