L'Atlas
Born in France in 1978. Lives and works in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris.
L’Atlas began creating graffiti during the 1990s. Fascinated both by the art of drawing and of lettering, he embarked on a study of traditional Arabic calligraphy in Morocco, Egypt, and Syria. He became particularly interested in Koufi, a geometric script that he applied to the Latin alphabet, and in so doing, created his own typography. During his time working in film he learned conventional editing techniques and produced several documentaries. Bolstered by this experience, while having never really abandoned the streets, he developed a pictorial universe in which each letter is considered a shape and each shape, a letter. During his meanderings, the city itself seemed to him filled with signs, the near-abstract shapes of which he would reproduce using print-making techniques.
